The 1970s was in many ways a complete contrast to the previous decade.  During the 1960s Britain emerged from the austerity of the post war years and made a name for itself as the epicentre of everything that was hip and cool.  It produced its own music, art, design and fashion.  London and Liverpool were the places to be if you wanted make a name for yourself.  For example, Jimi Hendrix made it big in London before exploding onto the market in America.  By the early 1970s many of the figureheads of the 1960s were dead or burnt out.  Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison - all had gone to the Happy Hunting Grounds and the Summer of Love seemed to be over.  The Beatles had split up and the music scene had moved on.

During the Seventies the changes in fashion, music and design continued at an extraordinary rate.  Fame and fortune awaited many new stars, and lifestyles in homes and at the workplace continued to evolve as new technology was introduced.  As many of the hopes and dreams of the '60s faded away a harsh reality took over.   Britain endured the three-day week and had to contend with power shortages while refuse piled up in the streets.  Punk Rock emerged to counter the saccharine sweetness of bland pop music.  America made undignified exist from Vietnam and the UK celebrated the Silver Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.  By the end of the decade the Labour Party had run out of steam and Britain elected its first woman Prime Minister who heralded in a new era that was to dominate the 1980s - Thatcherism.
